Income Generation for Vulnerable Communities - Various Locations, Uganda
A project to develop neighbourhood groups that provide support for people wanting to develop their own small business and family/relationship/life skills. The groups also have bible teaching, prayer and discipleship.
Partners: Local Community Based Organisations and Non Governmental Organisations, other contributors
Summary: We have gathered a group of leaders who successfully lead income generating groups in different communities. This group can go into other communities and work with local leaders there to identify group leaders, provide training, resources and ongoing coaching to establish the income generating groups as self-sustaining groups. The leaders of each group will have the opportunity to connect with the network of other leaders from other communities.
Resource: To employ a community worker is NZ$46 a month. This community worker will mobilise those in a local community who are interested in such a group. There is also the cost of NZ$25 per month for transport to the community meeting, and airtime to mobilise the group and to receive training and support.
Then NZ$450 for the community worker to attend an annual training.
We are also seeking NZ$250 per month for a training coordinator to oversee the project, visit the community workers quarterly and provide mentoring.
We currently have community interest for groups in the following villages. A potential community worker has been identified in each community.
- Mpuddme
- Bwekula
- Bugembe
- Abako
- Adwari
Future Development: Once a group reaches 25 members who have all successfully saved, gotten a loan and paid back this loan, then the group can propose a sustaining plan for the benefit of the whole group. Eg purchase a cow in calf that one member owns and the calf is given to another group member. The cow and potentially the calf are artificially inseminated to produce more until every group member has a producing cow. The group would receive a grant of NZ$1400 for the initial cow in calf and each family would meet the costs of shelter, housing, inseminating and immunizing the animals.
The groups have identified their need for workshops on various skills. We are working out how to meet this need. Workshop titles include:
- Growing and storing food
- Raising animals at home
- Developing your business
- Parenting
- Relationships
- Recovery from trauma
- How to develop yourself
- Knowing the seasons and market
- Planning
- Literacy
- Financial literacy
- Communication
- Record Keeping
- Soap making
- Packaging for selling small goods
- Preserving food
- Storage of Food
- Nutrition
- Budgeting
Supporting Vulnerable Children - Namulesa, Uganda
A project to support vulnerable children while community workers come alongside family, helping them to care for their own children.
Partners: Aroha Community Ministries Uganda, Rivers of Life Global Ministry, other contributors
Summary: Aroha Community Ministries Community Workers come alongside parents/family of vulnerable children, assisting them in their desire and capacity to care for their own children. Support is given in the form of relationship / parenting mentoring, opportunity to be part of an income generating / discipleship group, contributions towards school fees and medical costs while the parents gain capacity to meet these costs themselves.
Resource: NZ$100 per month to sponsor a child/teenager. This includes a contribution towards school fees, access to a community worker and medical costs. Sharif - 11 year old in his last year at Primary School
